(re)Formated [Flashback]
Part One
Merlot sat on the edge of her bed, which rested in her newly rented apartment.
In April of 2015, Merlot packed up her things and moved from Japan to the United States. Her friend, and sporadic lover, Kendra Parker, invited her to room with her in Las Vegas. To Merlot, it was a no brainer. She had a free place to stay, she got to see her good friend more often.
And of course, there was sex.
The two lived together for some months. They got along very well, for the most part. Well, that is until feelings got involved. Or, shall we shall, more involved.
The two always had mutual crushes on each other. However, they kind of hit a stand still. Kendra didn’t want a relationship, Merlot did. They settled for a kind of “friends with benefits” sort of deal, which actually worked out well.
. . .
When Merlot was dealing with the mess involving Glory and FFP, she went into a spell of depression. FFP’s mistreat tore her up in particular. She had moved across the world for the promotion. Eventually, that is what lead her to get a job as a blackjack dealer. And, that’s what also caused her to move out
Kendra saw Merlot at her weakest, darkest moments. She was comforting, and supportive. But, in her mind, she felt as if she had been using Kendra. She had stayed in the house rent-free for months. She felt like a mocher, a free loader.
Blackjack dealing was a lucrative venture. In a couple of months, Merlot was able to make enough put a down payment nice, medium sized flat. The price was decent, and it was closer to her job.
Kendra was not particularly happy about the it, not at first anyway. After they talked for a while, she was okay with it; or, she understood things more clearly. Upon moving, the two still talked regularly, a couple times week. However, Merlot needed some time to readjust to living alone again.
Buzz...
Buzz...
Bzzz…
Merlot glanced over and saw her iPhone going off. She didn’t bother looking at the caller ID; she hit the green button on the screen.
“Hello?” A voice came through on the other side. It was her cousin, Sake Ayano. Sake lived in New York. She asked if Merlot was doing alright, word of the move had gotten to her. “Hai, I’m doing okay. Merlot is just sitting here at the moment.” The was a question about her wrestling. “I don’t know about wrestling right now. Only thing I’ve got on my plate is blackjack dealing.” Sake mentioned something about Merlot visiting. “Hai, I will visit when I can. Maybe in a couple months.” There was a bit of a pause. Sake said that she was sorry, about what happened. “No need to be sorry. It’s not your fault―it’s not anyone’s fault. It is the way life is, sometimes.”
Sake said that she loved her, and that she’d call back soon. “Alright, love you too cousin. Good bye.”
Merlot hung up and tossed the phone a few feet away from her. Her eyes got a bit watery. She rolled over and covered her face.
