It's strange.
Kotone has lost before. She lost in Seishin before, and she has lost many times before in her bodybuilding career.
But it never involved the word "submit."
Kotone has never been one for submission. She doesn't like submitting to societal norms, and she doesn't like to admit that she has limits.
But Kai Shizuka made it clear, to her and to everyone, that she has limits, and she made her say the word she loathes.
"Why do you refuse to submit to our wishes?"
A much younger Kotone is looking up at her mother of that era. Kotone is not dressed as dramatically as she would be in 2015, but it's clear through her sleeveless t-shirt and short shorts that she is already well on her way to her career in bodybuilding.
And the disapproving look on her mother's face makes it clear that she is not fond of this choice.
"Everyone just acts like everybody else. That's boring."
"Maybe it is, but that's how the world operates. If everyone just did what they wanted all the time the world would descend into chaos. That's how society holds itself together."
Kotone pouts openly, crossing her arms over her chest. "But how does anyone ever create anything new? How does anything ever get better?"
Alright, Kotone, focus. What brought you to Seishin?
To prove that beauty and power are not mutually exclusive. To show that a woman like me can succeed even in a promotion that emphasizes women's looks, and that a woman like me is still beautiful even if she does not conform to the usual aesthetics.
Well, the Honour of Seishin championship match is filled with women who would agree with your assessment. So...haven't you succeeded?
Maybe...but it sure doesn't feel like success.
You are a bodybuilder who is trying to be a joshi. No one said that it would be easy. You knew going in it would not be easy. You knew going in that the transition would be difficult. You knew going in you would fail before you succeeded.
Perspective is really important right now. You think you've failed twice now, but you are in the running for a championship built up around honor. Despite two failures...well, three if you count the excursion to Toronto, the powers that be in Seishin believe you to be worthy of such an opportunity. That's gotta' be worth something, right?
Maybe...
