Kant’s Theory
Word Count: 495
Merlot Ayano lay on her bathroom floor; it’s where she often went to think and clear her mind. Underneath her body rested a plush, comfortable accent rug. Merlot placed her hands beneath her head and peered up at the ceiling.
“In professional wrestling, the word ‘stepping stone’ often gets tossed around. It’s an ugly term, one that always causes great anger amongst wrestlers; and, for good reason. The dictionary definition of a stepping stone is ‘an undertaking or event that helps one to make progress toward a specified goal.’ That’s interesting.” Merlot let out a small sigh. “In the context of professional wrestling, the term is somewhat derogatory. It literally means that you are stepping on people's heads, shitting on their success, just to further your own."
She paused for a second. “The great philosopher Immanuel Kant stated that an individual should not be viewed as a means to an end, but as an end itself. Again, in context of our industry, this means you should respect each opponent and match; you shouldn’t always be thinking ahead to the next opportunity.” Merlot closed her eyes. “Right now, there is a target on Merlot’s back. Not only am I a member of the famous ‘Ayano Clan,’ but I’m also in contention to become the first Champion of Seishin. Defeating me would raise anyone’s stock and value.”
Merlot lay there is silence for a few moments.
“Initially, I was excited and amped up for this match against Natalie McKinley. However, then something hit me―Natalie just wants to use me, just like the majority of Seishin wants to use me!
“I’ve made it clear that I respect the woman and her determination, her drive. Now, does she respect me? Well, that’s the million dollar question. She claims to. However, if she truly did, she wouldn’t be looking past this match and fixating on future title reigns. If she honestly respected me, she’d see this match for what it is―a chance for two amazing wrestlers to go out there and kill it in the main event! Most wrestlers don’t get that opportunity.”
Slowly, Merlot lifted herself off of the floor. She gazed into the mirror; her self reflection appeared to be aggressive and intense.
“Over the course of my career, a lot people have tried to use me and abuse me―Glory For Puro and Full Force Pro are prime examples. My skill in the ring has created more stars than some talent agents have.”
Merlot nodded. “I will not let that happen, not this time. I’m certain that Natalie will be a star some day; her talent will shine bright and take her to great heights. But at Seishin Five, Merlot will snuff out that bright light, at least for one match. Certainly, Natalie dreams of a valiant victory―but all she will receive is a swift boot and a load of sorrow!"
She continued to stare at the mirror until Raven called out. “Come to bed Merlot.”
“...Hai.”
