Yay! Starting a thread about this. Hopefully we can get the talks a rolling. Last season, for me, was fairly colourful and here are some thoughts. They're a little spoiler heavy, so...yeah.
A Boring World Where The Concept Of Dirty Jokes Doesn't Exist
First off, I kinda felt that the series actually only went through 11 episodes and had one extra, which could have been an OVA. The overall story is an interesting one with Japan becoming the most moral following country by means of major censorship to the point of imprisoning those who use even foul language. For those that don't know the story centres around a group known as SOX in teir fight against this rule by means of showcasing uncensored material throughout their school. It was pretty humourous at times and definitely one that never really gets dark. I did feel the last few episodes seemed to drag on a bit plus they kinda kicked the romantic interludes to the curb pretty quickly. Like as soon as it's addressed is the only time it's addressed. Otherwise, Anna is always hot and bothered by Okuma. They do do the whole censor to buy thing, but with little images that I actually prefer over the general nudity. So purchase? Only if you want to see anime boobies and hear swear perverse language in Japanese.
Bikini Warriors
A series that is exactly how it sounds. Bikini Warriors is about...bikini clad warriors. lol Each episode is only 4-5 minutes long, including the Funimation intro and the ending theme so don't look for story elements here. Instead, be introduced to the four characters; Fighter, Mage, Paladin, and Dark Elf. About the only character developing here is that Paladin can be a sex freak at times. Every episode is a parody of JRPG's so that's what kept me going throughout, such as having to fight a possessed party member, deciding how much to sell for unique items at stores, and just about every ending imaginable.
Monster Masume
A harem anime with a monster girl twist that from episode one I knew how it was going to end. Since the manga is still ongoing, and given that it's again a harem (most people have probably already guessed this by now), we got...an open ending. Gasp! Which means that Kimihito doesn't end up with anyone but instead most of the females in the show are still vying for his affection. Towards the end we got a death threat scenario, which was a good way to introduce some of the characters who came in later on in the manga series and gave the otherwise pleasant toned series a darker atmosphere. Not by much though, like it wasn't taken super seriously, which was good. Like any harem anime I tend to pick sides and hope for the characters best. Even if I know the ending and it's just for fun. In this one I kinda liked Papi. I thought she was cute.
Non Non Bayori
A slice of life anime with no real story, just four girls in the same small school set in what we might refer to as the "sticks", or heavy rural area. Heavy on the rural, not as in heavily populated. A new girl moves in, Hotaru, and the series is essentially about the friendship between her and the other three girls from her class. Toward the end, Renge's sister Hikage, who had moved to Tokyo in the first episode, returns for the duration of the series. It's incredibly light hearted and worth a watch if you just want something...not so energetic as it does have a slow pace. The ending came as I had expected it. No real turn of events or sudden impact of a story. Although I was thinking that at one point Suguru would finally get a line in.
Prison School
The concept is simple here; five boys enter into an all girls school as a sort of test to see how it gets handled. Their first day they get caught peeping in on the girls changing room and thus end up in a prison built up in the center of school grounds. Thus Prison School. So yeah, understanding the general concept is easy, keeping up with their escape plans...that's a whole other ball of wax. The first attempt takes the course of a few episodes and is highly detailed followed up by smaller attempts and then the grand scheme to get free, which is quite brilliant when you actually watch it explained out. Overtop of that is the Student Council's DTO plan in which they work the five boys against one another answering to their problems in ways of getting them to act out so that they can just overall get them expelled. The ending, I found, to be a delightful one. Even if they don't go into full detail, you get enough of a sense in what's going on and just how screwed these individuals are.
Venus Project Climax (With the exception of the live action episodes)
A singing anime that mixes idols with mecha. The six episode long series takes the form of a tournament for idols in which singers literally battle it out with song as their "spirits" take the form of giant robots that do battle with one another. Once they're overdone their mecha, obviously, loses and the winner advances. Simple enough. In this one, like any other tournament based series, there are two main characters both with large ambitions. So you kinda know who's getting into the finals. This series did remind me in that of Queen's Blade in I was hoping they wouldn't do what they did there and turn one of the two against their wishes. Therefore, for me it was literally down to the wire of who's going to win. The only problem I had with the series was what the frak happened with the abused girl? All the other ones show back up but her! No one even mentions her again! She's got her teammates pushing her around, putting out their cigarettes on her arms and legs, but nope! Let's let the others hang out at a beach! Ugh. Not that I wanted to see more abuse there, just something that said "Oh, she got herself away from them. Go Romi!" The live action series, from the gist I got in the one episode of it I watched, pitted the anime voice actresses against the game voice actresses in different games to see who would emerge victorious. Don't ask me, I think the game voice actresses won out in the first episode. It was a nice concept and kept the thing alive I just wasn't that into it.
This season I'm going through:
Taimadou Gakuen 35 Shiken Shoutai
Garo: Guren no Tsuki
Ore ga Ojou-sama Gakkou ni “Shomin Sample” Toshite Gets-sareta Ken
Shinmai Maou no Testament Burst
Valkyrie Drive: Mermaid
Gakusen Toshi Asterisk
Rakudai Kishi no Cavalry
Yuru Yuri (Season 3)
I haven't seen too much of them to really get an in depth feel. Thus far, however...I do agree with a lot of people that Asterisk and Calvary are a looooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot alike, Mermaid gives uncensored nudity and is very, very close to pure hentai, and Burst just got...um, weird near the end, hoping Tsuki turns into a good period piece, and Ojou-sama seems like it'll be an interesting watch where I hope they don't go too fan servicey. That's it thus far, stick around for more in a few weeks.
Party on,
Joe.
